Beardie update

We have now been able to prove the link between the recently sighted Bearded Tits and the established population at the Tay Reedbed. Qualified bird ringers including SNH staff caught a third bird which had been ringed at Taylodge on the 19th September by Iain Maltzer (see https://lochlevennnr.wordpress.com/2014/10/15/another-new-species-for-loch-leven-bearded-tit/). The bird, a female had full biometrics taken but at this time of year it is not possible to age beardies so we do not know if it a adult bird or one fledged this year.

Two more birds originating from the Tay reed from have been caught on the Ythan and further birds seen at  other reed bed locations in Eastern Scotland. Only time will tell if these birds will return to the Tay or not. Movements like these show how little we know about enigmatic species like the Bearded Tit but the picture is most certainly building.
