Dame Seona Reid, the Chair of the Heritage Lottery Fund in Scotland and Deputy Chair of the Heritage Lottery Fund in the UK formally opened the path. The theme of the ceremony was the unlocking of Loch Leven. Local organisations were given keys to officially unlock the trail.

The actual key that was used to rescue Mary Queen of Scots from Loch Leven Castle was bought along as part of the ceremony. It was presented to the Adams family of Blairadam by Sir Walter Scott and it found its way back to Loch Leven for the first time in many years.
